The Basics to Betting and Roulette
So What is Roulette?
Roulette is a popular casino game in which a player will make bets on a single number or multiple numbers, the colours red or black, and whether the number is odd or even. To determine which bet wins, a croupier will spin the ball in one direction and the wheel in the other direction. The ball will at some point fall into one of the 37 crevices revealing who bet correctly. Roulette is depicted in many movies, especially James Bond where his lucky combination is 17 black.
What’s the difference between the American Wheel and the European Wheel?
The game of roulette began in France giving it its French name which means “little wheel”. This game is believed to be a combination of four English games (E.O., Roly Poly, Reiner, and Ace of Hearts), two Italian board games (Hoca and Biribi), and a pre-existing French board game of the same name. Due to wide amounts of cheating among roulette players in the 1800’s New Orleans and Mississippi which had strong French influences, the board was moved on top of the table and then a double zero was added, creating 38 pockets instead of 37. To this day, this is still the major distinction between the European Wheel and the American Wheel. Furthermore the American version uses simplified betting methods and provides a quicker cash flow. Because of the double zero the numbers on the wheels of the European wheel are not in the same order as the numbers on the American wheels, but both adhere to the standard way of determining colour for number group. For 1-10 and 19-28, odd numbers are red and evens are black. For 11-18 and 29-36 odd numbers are black and even numbers are red, with the single zero (European) or double zeros (American) being green. An extension of the American version is California Roulette which uses cards to determine the winner, not the slot on the wheel. The wheel is then spun and then a pointer picks the winning card. There are other variations within California Roulette, but the main rule is that a card must determine the winner.
How do you bet?
There are two different terms for betting when it comes to roulette, placing an inside or outside bet. An inside bet is picking a specific pocket or tight group of pockets that the ball will fall into. An outside bet is much more broad and is usually a bet on the colour, high and low, or odd and even, with pay-out being distributed based on probability. Once a winner is decided, no one is allowed to make bets until the winners receive their pay-out. From there, the winning chips are left on the table and another round is started.
